1.00pm      Drummie Dan

1.15pm      Stephen Mc Daid and Morvern Tuathlaith

2.30pm      Tess Liautaud and Band

3.45pm       The Eastern

Stephen McDaid and Morvern Tuathlaith

Donegal-born guitarist and songwriter Stephen McDaid has been a part of Christchurch's music scene for over 20 years.

His debut album Trail Maps appeared in 2022 inviting comparisons to Richard Thompson, Davy Graham and Mark Kozelek. It’s an 11-track acoustic affair showcasing a myriad of tunings and disciplines on his signature Babicz Identity guitar.

Only just having finished High School, Morvern Tuathlaith brings her unique sound back to Live at the Point for a third time.

With influences as varied as Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and The War on Drugs she’ll perform a set of original songs displaying a sophistication beyond her years.

Her debut album is scheduled to appear in 2025 so the Diamond Harbour audience will be receiving an exclusive airing of her material ahead of its release.

Tess Liautaud and band

The music of Franco-American singer-songwriter Tess Liautaud can not be easily defined. It hangs in the balance of her voice, warm like honey; it carries a depth of raw emotion, delivered with melodic grace and country soul.

Her songs are easy listening, in that Jackson Browne, dreaming of Laurel Canyon, Americana sort of way and together with her band Liautaud creates a sound steeped in classic folk'n'country rock'n'roll, this is music that will grow roots in your heart and lift you up, the way it is supposed to.

“Her new album Blue Mind, is an assured work of rootsy Canterburycana (a genre title we're workshopping), featuring familiar Christchurch cohorts like Adam Hattaway, Elmore Jones, and Jessie Shanks, the shining star here is Tess Liautaud's warm and heartful voice, riding high over her fantastic new set of songs". - Flying Out

The Eastern

The Eastern are a string band that roars like a punk band, that swings like a gospel band, that drinks like a country band, that works like a bar band, that hopes like folk singers, and sings love songs like union songs, and writes union songs like love songs, and wants to slow dance and stand on tables, all at the same time. Whether roaring as a thunderous seven-piece band or swinging the loud lonesome sound as a smaller combo and having played over 2000 shows in their storied 15 year ramble, The Eastern can hold it down in all settings for all comers.

The Eastern have played in every nook and corner of the good isles of New Zealand, and have broken strings and dented floors in parts beyond, Australia, Europe and the United States. From Papanui to Portland, Shirley to Switzerland, they’ve seen more than their share of stages, street corners and bars but treat any opportunity to hold it down and play as a gift and one they’d be fools to waste. They play like they mean it, like it’s all they know how do…because they do and it is.

Session 7

1.00pm      Drummie Dan

1.45pm     Port Hillbillies

3.00pm    The Skeatles

4.00pm    Bad Revivals

Port Hillbillies

Emerging from the shadows of the Port Hills, one American, Justin Rogers on mandolin, guitar and vocals, one Aussie Gary Elford on guitar, acoustic bass and vocals. They meet up with a six-toed Kiwi singer, banjo and guitar player Steve Stern to share their love of Bluegrass, Old Time and Americana music.

Playing together now for over five years they have formed into a well-balanced instrumental and vocal trio, driven by Steve’s banjo playing and Justin’s sympathetic and innovative mandolin ornamentation. Gary’s contribution on guitar and bass pulls the whole thing together into the tight unit that is the Port Hillbillies. They play a range of songs and tunes from toe tapping recognisable standards to obscure songs from neighbouring genres that are given the Port Hillbillies once over.

The Skeatles

The Beatles evolved from The Quarrymen Skiffle Group and The Skeatles take the Fab Four back their roots - performing the songs The Quarrymen didn’t know that they had yet to write.

Skiffle Beatles, get it? - Now that’s a Revolution!

The Skeatles feature a cream of Skiffolicious talent having fun with The Beatles.

Jamming the back beat in an offbeat band are:

David Thorpe - Guitar, Vocal, Harmonica (Li’l Chuck The One Man Skiffle Machine / Davey Backyard)

Paul Kean - Teachest Bass (The Bats)

Dan Heatley -  Drums (Shane MacGowan and The Popes)

JC Collins - Guitar, Vocal (Cement Garden / The Bends)

Liam Collins - Banjo (Little Paper Planes)

Gregory Shannahan - Washboard (Malarkey Irish band)

David Thorpe has dived so deep into the world Skiffle, that he recently talked with Rod Davis,  an original  member of The Quarrymen -  a guy who was there, the day Paul met John and whom Paul would later replace in the band.

1.30pm  Abi Chessum

2.30pm     Al P and his P.A.L's

3.45pm     Adam Hattaway and the Haunters

Abi Chessum

Abi has been performing in Lyttelton for over a year and has had a blast participating in the local music scene. She is looking forward to jazzing up the stage with some soft soul.

Adam Hattaway and the Haunters

Adam Hattaway is a hard man to pin down. Where did he come from? Where is he going? What does he want? Where is he now? He’s out there somewhere. On his way to the next gig. Stopping along the way to pick up some extra lip balm. If nothing else, he is always prepared.

Some people know what they want, but they are the lucky few. Adam Hattaway is still searching for answers and singing to the ones who still don’t know what it is they are looking for. They are his people. You won’t hear him singing out over the cafe sound system, muddying the conversations of people on their work break. The algorithm doesn't care for Adam Hattaway
and that’s the way it ought to be.

Session 2

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the event Sunday 12th due to the poor weather.

Finished Business

Finished Business play jazz mainly from the pre-bebop period, which they call Vintage Jazz, covering favourite vocal standards, instrumental features from Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt and others.

They’ve recently relaxed their rule of only playing songs that are older than they are, because some of our current members are young enough to qualify them to play Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock!

They’ve played at Markets around Christchurch, Riverside, parties and Corporate gigs, and regularly play at Jazz After Work at ARA, as well as usually to be found at the Commoners in Lyttelton every Tuesday night at 7:30pm.

The players are:

Allan Hawes, clarinet, sax, flute, vocals.

Michael Russell, trumpet, flugelhorn.

Cathy Boscolo, vocals, guitar and sax.

Bert Parrant, guitar.

Peter Stephen, double bass.

Serena Bayles, drums.

They’re inspired by the opportunity to play originals in a band and have fun along the way.

The interest in the refreshing diversity of the songs and mix of genres ignited an energy which has fuelled powerful creative inputs from every band member. The outcome of this collaborative approach is an originals band that delivers a vibrant and noteworthy performance high in energy, intensity and fun. One which is smouldering with groovy, funky rhythms, interesting and sublime melodies and thought - provoking lyrics. All with a distinctive style encompassing the mix of genres.

Band members are Kay Duncan - vocals and acoustic guitar
